These four walls. What does your space say?

I have recently become interior decorating obsessed. This fanatical new desire of mine has been building up for quite sometime. At the start of this year, I was all fired up like a steam train to buy my first home and start my first full-time job. Alas, nothing seemed to prevail, everyday I would search real estate.com, everyday I would hope one of my favourite design studios would call and say they love me. For a good few months I was all over the shop, I became a printer, a freelancer, a work experience person, a tutor, and a house-sitter. I was the definition of a yoyo job dieter, bopping around Brisbane moving from place to place, from space to space.

During these months where I had a number of different jobs and different homes, everywhere I went I had to make it my own. I like to call it ‘Larissafying’. It made the space mine and made me feel at ease. Even if it was just a photo-frame or my comfy duvet or my amazing hand sewn bunting flags (the product of my first sewing lesson). By incorporating these things into my space, they all remind me and tell everyone else stories about who I am. These may seem like simple things but they all have a strong impact on my mood when I walk into that space, designed by me. Call me crazy but this is why interior decorating has become my newfound glory! It has the ability to change your mood and influence your behaviour, spaces are inspirational and wonderous things that some of us tend to neglect. Spaces say as much about who you are as the clothes and attitude you choose to wear.

We rarely take the time to consider how much of our lives we spend surrounded by four walls and the emotional and physical impact these walls have on our lives. Take a moment and think about all you favourite spaces, bookstores, cafes, candy shops, coffee stalls, homes. What do you like about these places?

It isn’t until you step back or you are in an unfamiliar space that you really start to notice what is around you. Once you have done this you really begin to realise the impact an interior can have on your mood and state of mind.

To shed some light on this I thought I would introduce you to a couple of my favourite spaces.

The first of these is Cafe Bouquiniste. The café was introduced to me just last week! As soon as I walked in the door I was like a kid in a candy store. My eye’s widened, they had a floor to ceiling recessed bookshelf (I always have wanted one of those) full of amazing books, an eclectic and unique style that is edgy, calm, cool and collected. As soon as I sat down I said, ‘this is exactly what my house is like’, everything is individual and has a place of its own. With the addition fresh home-style baking wafting through the air, it was a match made in heaven. My one sweet hour at Café Bouquiniste wouldn’t have been the same with out the obvious love and care the owners have spent creating this amazing, uplifting and quirky space also carried through to their menu. All I have left to say is…I was surely impressed with the consistency of their brand from start to finish.

The second of these spaces is Lumino. You may be thinking, yeah, yeah, yeah, here we go. However, it honestly is! The first time I walked in everything seemed so shiny and new and orderly. My brain clicked straight into focus mode. The space is such a huge contrast to my space at home, yet it still appeals to me so greatly. The space brings out the list maker, planner and organiser side of me, its all systems are go. The clean, light, modern, restrained, minimalist, orderly and functional space not only inspires me but some how showers me with magical focus dust. However, never fear, there is room for ‘Larissafying’, allowing me to add a bit of my personality into the space. With notice boards by our desks I can pin up whatever my heart desires…mostly nerdy design stuff.

I know these spaces are completely contrasting however, when I look at my personality and my design style both of these spaces capture a little piece of me and my character. It is the power and impact of each space that triggers these traits of mine, simply because of how the space is designed and how it makes me feel.
